Friday August 19 update

This is the last update on the shifting as WE ARE DONE!!!!

Yes, the third floor is shifted. All books from S – Z and J – Q are in their proper home. The R’s remain in order yet in a separate collection. K’s and H’s are in the lower level where they will remain.

Here is a summary of what we did since June 1.

1) Moved all periodicals to 2nd floor and moved the current ones with the bound ones.
2) Moved gov. docs to the lower level
3) Pulled out long runs from stacks and reference
4) Pulled out items for Aux. Ref collection (mostly from reference)
5) Moved reference books to small shelves adjacent to Oval Desk
6) Shifted A – E 740 to first floor
7) Moved E 740 – GV to third floor
8) Shifted third floor to make room for new items coming from Lower Level
9) Moved most of the legal collection to lower level including the K’s from third floor
10) Scanned Aux and Aux ref. items to give LSO list of barcodes to change in online catalog
11) Moved browsing collection to third floor
12) Moved newspapers to the old browsing collection on 2nd floor
13) Added tabloids to the current newspaper section on 2nd floor

About the only thing we didn’t touch were the VHS tapes and the DVDs

I’m tired now and will be off on Monday and Tuesday. Tour on Wednesday. Thanks!

Thursday Aug. 18 update

Well we are almost there. We should be finishing up the backshift on Friday. Then we'll move the remaining Q's into their proper home and then decide what to do with the R's that won't fit. Don't forget that I'm giving a "tour" on Wednesday at 2 of the move so you can see where stuff is. It's been an amazing 8 weeks or so, and the students were just great. I'll miss them (none have work study) so we can't hire any.

Next up for me is to really weed the H's aggressively so they can move to 3rd floor at a later time.

Monday August 15 updates

Fantastic progress today. This week we are attempting to shift from the J's near the computers all the way to where the QK's are split (Almost to Paul's office) Today we went from about LB 1100 well into the ML's. We just might make it. Again kudos to the students who work really hard without complaint (at least to me!)

Thursday Aug. 11 update

Shifted through GN. G's will be complete tomorrow (Friday) Here's the plan for next week

Taking out the K's from 3rd floor and moving them to lower level. This puts most legal material in the lower level. We will then condense the rest of the collection starting with J and moving toward the PT's. The goal is to free up enough space for the R's and S's that are out of order on the floor.

If you are bored and want to help any hours the students are not in, see me. Monday we have times from 11 - 1 and 3 - 5. Tuesday - Thursday from 12 - 1 and 4 -5. Friday anytime after 2.

Questions, as usual, please see me!

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Wed. August 10 updates

We have complete our condensing of the R's. Stuff from Lower Level is coming up now. We have progressed to about F 291. We should be done with F's by Friday and then will start with the G's.
There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Tuesday shift updates

We continue to compress the QK - SD books on third floor. This will most likely be done tomorrow. Once that is done, we will bring up the E's and F's (I am confident they will fit) We'll try really hard to get the G's done as well, leaving the H's to remain in the lower level.

Once all that is done, my job will be to compress the remaining area on 3rd to try to get the remaining Q's - SD's to fit in their proper place. Depending on the amount of material in this area, my goal is to complete that by end of Fall semester. Then I'll continue to weed the H's so they can fit in on third floor next summer.

Monday, August 8, 2011

Monday August 8 updates

We are compressing the R's on the third floor into the space occupied by the T's. Once that is done we'll bring up the remaining E-G's that will fit.
Oversize items have been compressed onto one unit of shelving in their same area.
That's it for today!

Friday, August 5, 2011

Friday August 5 updates

The books from SF - ZA are all shifted an in their permanent home on 3rd floor. All stack labels are up to date as of today.
Next week we will compress the QL - RZ books to free up room to move up the rest of the E and then F books from the lower level.
Once that is done we will see how much space we need to free up for the QL - RZ books and condense books accordingly.

Thursday Aug. 4 updates

The third floor is almost done shifting backwards from the Z's into the TA's. This will be done tomorrow. Then we will take the remaining items (Approx. QL - S) and cram them together towards the computers. Then E and F will come up to the third floor.

Plan is to have the movers until Aug. 19. If we are close to a good ending, I might have them in on the 20th to finalize things.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Wed. August 3 shifting update

Again, not terribly interesting, but we have freed up room on the 3rd floor to back shift the T’s into their permanent home! This should take about 2 – 3 days to fill the available space. Then we’ll tighten up the rest of the books on 3rd and start bringing up more E’s and hopefully some F’s as well.

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Tuesday, August 2 update

This is a hard one to explain, so if you have questions come see me.
1. We are creating some space where the Q's were on the third floor for the T's.
2. We are also creating space at the beginning of the P's for future growth there.

If you are confused, come see me. This is also a ploy to see if you really read these!!

Friday July 29 shifting update

well we can move no more books for a bit. Every space we can move to is complete. We moved two things today:

1) The Library science Z's were moved to stack 73--a previously unused stack unit near the Juvenile collection.

2) The stacks along the study rooms closest to the elevator on third floor now have the E's that continue the collection from 1st floor. These are the "short" stacks along the study room walls.

What's on the agenda? We will now shift the third floor to see how much room there is since we have
a) moved the Z's and
b) Moved all the long runs out

Once that is done we should be able to move more E's and then F's to the third floor. My goal is to complete the tall ranges on third floor from oversize to the computers. It's lofty, but might be done.

Please let me know if you have questions on all this.

Thursday July 28 shifting updates

Whew! The 1st floor is now complete with books through E 735. That's all books from A - E 735 are now shelved on the first floor. The break in the E's is at the end of the 19th century. The E's that will move to third floor will start with 20th Century history!

We have moved a fair number of the Long Runs to the Lower Level in the "old" periodical shelves. They will not stay here, but consider this a staging area so we can free up space on the third floor.

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Tuesday, July 26 updates

Efforts focused on moving the lower level collection. we are in the E's now. The "old" reference shelves will be full on Wednesday with the move to the legal collection to follow. Let me know if you would like a tour!

Have a great day/evening.

Friday July 22 updates

Spent most of the day moving the "aux" collection to the Lower Level. This is going quite slow as we are integrating items from two locations. We are into the JK area.

Focus next week will be on finishing the move from the lower level to 1st floor. Additionally moving some of the long runs from 3rd. Once that is done we will shift on 3rd and see what we have for space. that will determine my next move!

Thursday July 21 updates

Sorry about no post yesterday. Was doing Dean search stuff after 5.

The lower level books keep moving up. We are into the DA section now.

The "Aux" collection is slowly growing. We are into the HF section now (in the middle of the catalogs (Sears, Penny's etc.)

Am moving some of the "aux" collection from the end (Z's) to free up more room on third.

Kudos to Carrie and the LSO staff who are working very hard at pulling out the items from reference to the stacks and labeling the Aux collection.

Monday, July 18, 2011

Monday July 18 updates

1. The “Aux” collection has started to move downstairs. The first 11 titles are in their new home. these are starting about where the GT’s were along the wall and move towards the main aisle.

2. Books from the Lower Level are complete through the C’s. We have just moved a few titles in the D’s.

3. Shifting on third floor continues to make room for the collection up there.

4. Working on stack labels in the lower level. 21 22 and 23 are complete. Will work on more as soon as possible.

Will be off tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Shifters have their assignments.

Focus this week is the shifting on third floor. Need to free up space for the collection that is moving up there.

Thursday, July 14, 2011

Thursday July 14 updates

1. All Aux Ref items are now in the lower level. These are "older"reference books that librarians wanted to keep. These will not circulate. they have red "Aux Ref" sticker on them to designate their location.
2. The LL has been backshifted to create rooms for the Long Runs. This section of the library will be for long runs of titles (multiple volumes, annual items etc.) and WILL circulate. They will be indicated with a green "aux" sticker. We will begin to move these down on Monday.
3. Reference was redone a bit, labels are now in place to indicate that collection.
4. The Lower level shifting has moved into the C's.

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

wed. July 6 updates

My first major gaffe today. I started a team on shifting the third floor and showed them the wrong way. So stack 21 and 22 are a bit out of order. I'll fix when i get back.

All legal (except a few titles) are now in the lower level. The catalog is not yet updated to reflect this, but should be within a month or so. Titles remaining on 1st include Fed Supp, Fed Reporter, West's digest, Northwestern Reporter and all Michigan Legal titles.

Lower Level is being compacted to create room for Long Runs. Heather and Tiffany have shifted from the end of the collection into the HF's.

Periodicals continue to make progress. I have pulled some pre-1987 titles and stored them in room 140K We hope to get the remaining titles on the shelves no later than next Tuesday.

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Tuesday July 5 updates

Hope everyone had a great 4th. Here are the latest updates
1. Most of the legal collection is now in the lower level. We are keeping a few titles for the legal classes and all the Michigan legal on 1st floor.
2. The reference collection has been shifted onto the short stacks adjacent to reference through the Yearbooks. (LD 1771)
3. We are shifting the main collection on both the lower level and 3rd floor to make room for long runs and the main collection
4. Books from the Lower Level through B 100 are now on the first floor. As soon as we have the books from reference ready to shelve you will see more.

If you have any questions, let me know!

1. The tabloids and newspapers are now on shelf 36 (this was the first range of the old current periodicals)
2. The remaining current periodicals from "Journal of the American Chemical Society" to the end are now interfiled with the bound periodicals. The current periodical shelves are now empty.
