Weeding update (focus is shifting)

The DSS department is going to start posting updates on the MI-SPI weeding project on this blog since weeding and shifting are going to be closely related activities for the duration of the MI-SPI project.  Since we haven't gotten retention notes into the bibliographic records of all LC classification areas yet, we haven't been weeding in a strict backwards LCC order.  Here's a summary of what has been processed for withdrawal thus far:

G, M, R, S, U, V, and Z have been pulled, records marked for withdrawal, and volumes stamp & slashed.

H, HM-HT have been pulled, and we are currently pulling HJ's from the HA-HJ withdrawal list.

HV, HX, J, K, and T weeding lists have been printed, and these will be the next areas where books with be withdrawn.

L, N, P, and Q are pending.

As of today (June 28), Yuri reports that 6278 bibliographic records (i.e. titles) and 6840 item records (i.e. volumes) have been processed for withdrawal.  As of June 17, we had shipped 78 boxes of books to Better World Books, and there a substantial number of boxes already packed for the next shipment.

If you have any questions, please let Leah know.

Activity update for Thursday, June 6

Shifting has pretty much halted (we've moved to Life)  Students are now working on pulling books for the MI-SPI project.  U - Z is done and I am fairly certain the M's are done as well.  Books will not be shifted at this time as the space created is not worth the move yet.  Maybe NEXT summer!

That's all for today!

Thursday, May 30 update

Shifting in the periodicals continues.  We are to Journal of Infectious Diseases.  Stack labels are posted and app updated.

Monday afternoon we hope to start weeding books!  I won't have much to say about that, but looks like a change of pace coming soon.

Wed. may 29 shift update

We continue to work on the periodicals.  The first stack set (row 1 - 16) is complete.  We are in the I's now.  So far we have created about 10 empty shelves.  Leaving quite a bit of growth space.  this work will probably slow down a bit starting next week as we begin to work on the withdrawal of books.  This will take the students away from the shifting which is fine.

Thanks and have a great day!

Wednesday, May 22 update

Sorry for the delay in posting.  Here are the latest updates:

As of Monday about 11:50 the R's all made it up to the third floor.  So no more split collection.  Yuri is on vacation so the catalog may not get updated for a bit.

The Aux Ref books are also on the move across the aisle.  They will reside after the legal reference books.  This will empty that entire side for the Public Library move.  This will be finished today (wed.)

The next focus in on moving the periodicals (again!)  With the JSTOR removal, there is plenty of space.  We really do need to make this move in an effort to create space in some of the tighter areas where I left scant space.  Also this may free up some areas to look at a totally new arrangement of the spaces.  This will likely be the last major shift of the collection this summer as we move to starting the withdrawal process in June.  For note we have shifted into the 3rd range of the periodicals.
